Halloween Part 2: Trick or Treat

In past years we have driving to Wichita to trick or treat at my mother's church. West Heights United Methodist Church has a Trunk or Treat every year in there parking lots. Lots of fun!
And it was a great way for us to both have the experience of trick or treating without alot of walking and show grandma and grandpa our costumes.
This year we decided to walk long my sister-in-law's street. We started from her house and walked up one side of the street about 3 or 4 blocks and then back down the other side.
We ended up at a friends house that was hosting a Halloween party and spent the rest of the night their. Well the adults did at least.

After about an hour we took the kids to Mark's folks house to sleep while we got to hang out with adult friends. It was a much needed night to friends and fun. All and all it was a great night. The boys enjoyed trick or treating.
The walk being just long enough to fill their bags but not so long that anyone complained about walking. Everyone got to enjoy one at least one piece of their yummy treasure.
We all had fun!

October Activities: Halloween Part 1

My confession is this: I've been feeling more than alittle depressed the past month or so. And while I have certainly managed to stay afloat, I would much rather be swimming happily rather than working so hard at keeping my head above water. However despite my crappy moods, I feel that much was accomplished during the month of October. So in an attempt to acknowledge my achievements I'm going to post about our October activities that I lacked energy to post about at the time. And cause it feels right to do so I'm going to work backwards from Halloween.

Halloween Part 1: The costumes

When asked what he wanted to be for Halloween Ian finally decided on The Cat in the Hat. My reaction was Perfect! I can do that, I thought. I then thought it would look really cute if Cai and Aiden went as Thing 1 and Thing 2. So I was off to make costumes.

For Ian I purchased black fleece sweater and pants. After looking everywhere in town, included the Halloween costume store, Mark and I decided to purchase a child's Cat in the Hat hat off Amazon.com. While I had contemplated making him a hat, I'm now very glad we purchased one. I was pressed enough making the other costumes. To finish off the outfit Ian wore my old cat tail from a cat costume that I held on to. It's amazing how much use the black cat ears and tail have gotten over the years.

For Cai and Aiden I decided to sew their costumes.

I bought adult red sweatshirts and created rompers out of them.

First I traced around rompers I had for each boy. Then cut along my lines.

The boys had lots of fun using the sleeves as hats.

I then sewed around the outside, leaving the inner legs separated. I did make a seam on the inner legs to prevent raveling. While I would love an industral snap press, it's just not going to happen right now. (First on my list is a Kitchen Aid). So I found snap pliers at Walmart that make the hammer snaps pretty easy to place.

I couldn't find simple snaps so I used pearl ones, alittle weird looking but they function. Then I panted the circles and writing using fabric pant.

I'm pretty proud of them i must say. They boys had to wear shirts underneath cause the necks were too big, but it worked b/c it was added warmth to keep them warm as we walked outside for trick-or-treating.

Now Thing 1 & 2 have bright blue hair. So for their hair I bought knit hats and blue yarn.

I than spent 3 days sewing loops of blue yarn into those knit hats. I must say I'm very, very, very proud of my work.

Don't be surprised if next years costumes have blue hair cause after all my hard work these wigs are going to get used again ;)

It felt good to create again. Reminding me why I love sewing, knitting and other such crafts. And now that the sewing machine is set again I think it's about time to sew some new wool longies for Aiden. (I did mention that we moved were our office is and thus my machine got moved, didn't I? ) Aiden is growing faster than I would like. What I won't give to keep him in babyhood just alittle longer.

Menu Plan Monday- Nov 1st

It's November!!! When did that happen. Only 4 more days and Aiden turns one. I'm not ready for him to be a year old yet. On the up side it means Thanksgiving is coming up soon. Which I'm
excited about cause my father is coming to visit then. :) I'm planning on sitting down this week and finally blogging about the past months activities. I've already got pictures up from the last month on our Picasa site. Just have to take the time to sit down and write. So wish me luck. And here is our menu for the week. Hopefully this weeks meals will be smoother than last weeks. I'm sad to note that for the first time in 4 1/2 years I burned dinner beyond repair last week. So here is to no repeats.

Monday: Liberian Pumpkin (using squash instead of pumpkin- carry over from last week)
Tuesday: Groundnut Stew
Wednesday: Macaroni and Cheese, broccoli, and bread
Thursday: Aloha Chicken Kebabs, mashed sweet potatoes, and peas
Friday: Pizza Braid
Saturday: Aiden's 1st Birthday Dinner!!!!

Menu Plan Monday- Oct 25th

Hello friends. Once again I let life slip away and haven't posted. I didn't even meal plan last week. And again I found that it made our day to day lives harder. On the up side, I did get to help with Ian's class field trip last Wednesday, we played in the leaves on Friday and took a great bike ride yesterday. So I feel pretty good about last week. I'm hoping to find some time to sit down and blog about our adventures from last week and the past couple of weeks here soon. Let's cross our fingers it gets done. It might be a busy week with me trying to finish up Halloween costumes for the boys. Well here is our menu, filled with fall produce. :) Happy Monday everyone! May it be a fun filled week.

Monday: Apple-Sausage Stuffed Acorn Squash
Tuesday: Broccoli- cauliflower Soup
Wednesday: Greens with Groundnuts over rice
Thursday: Black bean and Sweet potato Burritos
Friday: Liberian Pumpkin (use squash instead of pumpkin)
Saturday: Leftovers

Menu Plan Monday- Oct 11th

I've been feeling guilty for my long silence. To be honest I've felt in a funk and blogging has gone to the back burner. To illustrate my funky mood I haven't even wanted to create this weeks meal plan. Last week I didn't create a plan either and that just furthered the craziness of the week. So I knew I needed to make one this week. But the idea was not as calming as it normally is. Either way it's done. Here is what we are eating this week.

Monday: Sweet Potato Quesadillas
Tuesday: Spinach Squares and roasted winter veggies
Wednesday: Valentine Soup and fresh bread
Thursday: Seven-layer Casserole
Friday: Carol's Finish pea soup with apples (From Love Soup- I really need to get it back to the library I just hate to part with it yet)
Saturday: leftovers
Sunday: Breakfast or other simple meal

Very exciting note- Tonight Mark is taking me to hear Wailin' Jennys tonight at Goshen College. I'm very excited. The tickets were my birthday gift!!!!!!

Ok I know it's Tuesday, but be sure to check out the menus at Organizing Junkie.

Welcoming Autumn

In celebration of the Autumn Equinox we spent time yesterday at the Calendar Garden. Rachel, my sister-in-law, is part of a holistic mom's play group, which she invited me to join when we moved here. The group decided to meet our at the Calendar Garden for a picnic lunch and outside play.
As I've said before I love going out to this garden. It is so beautiful and peaceful. And I love watching my boys play there. But it was especially nice to spend time with other moms. It was a small group, but worked out beautifully.
The kids explored the water and flowers around them. We took a small hike on a trail that leads from the garden to the parking lot. And then sat on blankets in the shade to enjoy our lunch.
The kids founds leaves, watched butterflies, spotted a nest in the trees, and looked for acorns (although we did not find any). And while it was the hottest yesterday of the entire week, it was a great way to start the season.
Fall is Here!! It is my favorite season. And I'm so enjoying the crisp fresh air it brings. It smells different than summer. And I love it. Although I'm noticing the smell is slightly different than Kansas. And I am missing the Kansas air. But I look forward to my first Indiana Autumn. With fresh apples from the local orchard and beautiful fall leaves. Happy Autumn Equinox! Welcome beautiful fall.

Menu Plan Monday- Sept 20th

Last week we had many meals over at my mother-in-law's. I'm truly grateful that when things get too stressful around here we are always welcome at her house. It's just nice to have someone so close to help take care of us. :) In addition to meals this week I spent this evening making banana bread mini muffins for Ian's preschool class. Tomorrow is our turn to provide snack. Mini muffins and green grapes. Hopefully they will enjoy it.

Tuesday: Tomato and Zucchini Quiche
Wednesday: Carry over from last week- Black bean and Squash Soup, corn bread
Thursday: Coconut milk curry
Friday: Homemade pizza
Saturday: My birthday! and the MCC relief sale which we will spend part of our day at- no meal planned
Sunday: leftovers or breakfast dinner
